A Peek At Some Of The Trendiest Wireless Toys

Recent wireless audio gizmos such as iPods, wireless headphones and cell phones support latest wireless protocols. These protocols are supposed to cut the cord and deliver perfect high-fidelity audio. We will review some of the most recent products to find out which applications they work for.

Products can be categorized into devices with built-in and those with optional wireless functionality. Streaming audio devices will frequently have a plug-in slot for adding a wireless LAN card. Newest touch-screen iPods and iPhones already have WiFi and Bluetooth built in.

Bluetooth is fairly widespread as a low-cost wireless solution. Still, Bluetooth does have some pitfalls. These weaknesses are frequently overlooked but will have an effect on high-quality audio applications.

1) Short range

The range of Bluetooth devices is usually merely 30 ft. This excludes Bluetooth from multi-room applications.

2) Audio compression resulting from restricted data rate

Bluetooth will apply audio compression since it does not reliably offer a high-enough data rate for uncompressed audio. Audio compression will degrade the audio quality to some extent. High-quality audio transmission normally does not tolerate this kind of degradation. Therefore Bluetooth is usually not used in high-end audio products.

3) Audio latency

Because of audio compression, Bluetooth will cause a signal delay of no less than 10 ms which will cause the audio to be to some extent out of sync in case of video and real-time applications. This is again less of a problem for MP3 players.

4) Lacking multi-headphone support

Bluetooth is relatively restricted in regard to supporting streaming to multiple headphones. Streaming to numerous headphones is helpful for several people wanting to listen to the same transmitter. This is less of a problem for MP3 player applications.

Uncompressed audio streaming is supported by WiFi. WiFi is a very common protocol. However, WiFi also has pitfalls regarding simultaneous transmission to a number of receivers. It is practical for streaming music from a PC due to the high availability but is in general not used in wireless headphone products due to the relatively high power consumption of WiFi.

While newest-generation wireless speakers and wireless amplifier products use proprietary digital technologies, entry-level products regularly still depend on FM transmission which is noisy and has high audio distortion and high susceptibility to radio interference.

Newer wireless audio protocols avoid audio degradation by employing digital transmission. These often also have mechanisms such as forward error correction to deal with interference from other wireless devices.

Advanced wireless amplifier devices support uncompressed digital audio streaming to maintain the original audio quality. Some of these protocols allow streaming to an unlimited number of wireless amplifiers which is practical for whole-house audio distribution.

Some of these protocols support low-latency audio transmission which assures that the audio of all speakers will be in sync in a multi-channel application. Normally newer generation wireless audio transmitters will operate at 2.4 GHz. Some transmitter devices, such as Amphony's line of products, operate at the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band.

Wireless amplifiers are available with different levels of audio quality, power consumption and standby power. Having a high-quality low-distortion amplifier is fundamental for good sound quality. Wireless Class-D amplifiers typically have standby power of 5 Watts or less and a power efficiency of larger than 80% but sometimes high audio distortion. Audiophile wireless amplifiers offer an audio distortion of 0.05% or less.
